The Chapel Grove Optimist Club building in Gastonia caught fire Saturday evening, but no one was hurt.
About 5:45 p.m., firefighters responded to a call in the 3500 block of Chapel Grove School Road, and they found heavy fire in the attic, according to a release from Crowder’s Mountain Fire & Rescue.
Their firefighters and others from Union Road Volunteer Fire Department, Tryonota Volunteer Fire Department, Ranlo Fire and Rescue, and Agriculture Center Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the blaze in 10 minutes, the release said.
No one was in the building. The Chapel Grove Optimist Club is a nonprofit that offers recreational and educational activities for children ages 5-12, according to its Facebook page.
Firefighters estimated the fire caused $15,000 worth of damage, and its cause is under investigation by the Gaston County Fire Investigations Task Force.
