ASU student from Waxhaw hurt in mountains

A Union County man was recovering Monday in a Tennessee hospital after being injured while rappelling Saturday in the North Carolina mountains, authorities say.

Chad Mullins, 21, of Waxhaw, suffered shoulder and other injuries when he fell near the Lost Cove Trail area of Avery County, officials said. Avery County authorities said Mitchell fell about 70 feet and needed to be rescued by a helicopter after landing in a remote area.

He was rappelling with friends, and they called for help.

Mullins was airlifted to Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center, where officials Monday said he was in good condition.

Mullins is an Appalachian State University student and a former standout wrestler at Marvin Ridge High School.
