Metrolina Greenhouses to close S.C. facility

Metrolina Greenhouses plans to close a facility in Pendleton, S.C., the company said in a notice to South Carolina officials.

The Huntersville company reported the closure in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice, last month to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

The company attributed the closure to a consolidation of operations. Company officials said the 57 employees who worked in the Pendleton facility have been moved to an operation in York, S.C.

Metrolina Greenhouses was founded in 1972 by Tom and Vickie VanWingerden after they came to the U.S. from the Netherlands, according to the company’s website. Its 162-acre greenhouse is the largest single-site heated greenhouse in the U.S., the website says.
