Chicken truck crashes into Monroe store front

No serious injuries were reported Wednesday night when a tractor-trailer carrying empty chicken crates slammed into the front of a store in Monroe, police said.

The truck crashed into the middle of the Rite Aid store on Roosevelt Boulevard (U.S. 74) about 10:30 p.m. The store is at the corner of Sutherland Avenue.

Police said the truck’s fuel tank ruptured, and HazMat crews were called in to clean the spill. Several tow trucks were needed to pull the wrecked vehicle from the building overnight.

The driver of the truck was hospitalized but is expected to recover. Police are working to determine why the truck went off the road and into the building.

Two people inside the store were not hurt, authorities said.
