ROCK HILL A Rock Hill man was blinded in one eye after deputies say his neighbor pummeled him in the face this week because the victim allegedly refused to grab him a can of beer.

Deputies on Tuesday were sent to a Mandarin Drive home, near Turkey Farm Road, after a man, 51, reported that he was assaulted, according to a York County Sheriff’s report. The victim told deputies that an hour earlier he and his neighbor, 43, had been at a bar drinking. They left and returned to the victim’s house, where the neighbor asked the man for some beer.

When the victim declined to give him a drink, the neighbor allegedly began attacking the victim, pummeling him in the face with his fists, deputies reported. After beating the man, the suspect left. Deputies noted that the victim’s left eye was swollen shut and he suffered from several cuts on his face.

Paramedics arrived to treat the man, who initially refused to go to the hospital. Deputies insisted because he was intoxicated and seriously injured, the report states. The man was sent to Piedmont Medical Center, where medical staff told authorities the victim was now blind in his left eye and it’s possible the damage is irreversible. Deputies tried reaching the suspect by phone, but his number had been disconnected.

By Friday, the alleged assailant had not been arrested.
