More Information

Two N.C. state champions share the 2013-14 All-Observer girls basketball player of the year award.

Myers Park junior Rydeiah Rogers led her team to its first N.C. 4A public school state championship just a few weeks after Providence Day’s Jatarie White led her school to a fifth straight private school state title.

The award signifies the pair as the top players in the Observer’s 139-school coverage area in western North Carolina and York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina. The pair also shared the All-Mecklenburg player of the year award, which was announced Friday.

Rogers scored 25 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in a state finals win over Southeast Raleigh. Rogers was MVP of the state final and the N.C. 4A Western Regional championship a week prior.

White, a McDonald’s All-American, won a state title during each of her four years at Providence Day. She had 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in a 45-20 win against Greensboro Day in the 2014 state finals in February.

The All-Observer coach of the year is Barbara Nelson. Nelson led Myers Park to its first state championship and a top 10 national ranking in several polls. Nelson had previously won seven state titles as head coach at Providence Day.

Ms. Basketball Awards

White also takes the title of N.C. Ms. Basketball, signifying her as the state’s top player. The Observer annually announces Mr. and Ms. Basketball for North and South Carolina.

Ms. Basketball in South Carolina is Columbia’s A’ja Wilson of Heathwood Hall School. Wilson, who signed last week with South Carolina, is considered the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit. Her father, Roscoe, played at Benedict College and had a 10-year pro career in Europe. A’Ja started on the varsity in eighth grade, the same year she got her first offer from UNC-Greensboro. She grew from a 5-9 freshman to a 6-5 senior. Last season, she averaged 35 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks.
