Winners For Super Creativity

Three Charlotte-area K-8 students were first-place winners in the third annual Science & Superheroes Contest, hosted by Discovery Place and Spandex City Comics as part of the N.C. Science Festival.

Students were invited to create their own superhero with STEM-related (science, technology engineering and math) powers to solve real-world problems. They submitted an original drawing and a written description of their subjects.

First-place winners were Ezekiel Self (K-2), J.W. Grier Academy, for Ultra Engineer EZ; Kenzie Cox (3-5), Mountain Island Day School, for Tara Tornado; and Lilley Brookshire (6-8), Stanley Middle School, for Ever Green. Mountain Island Day School won 16 of the 21 total first-place, second-place or honorable mention awards.

Selected winners from among the 185 entries at 14 local public, private and charter schools were honored in a ceremony at Discovery Place. The contest will include high school students next year.
