Idlewild Road is open again in the Matthews-Mint Hill area Wednesday morning after a Tuesday evening wreck that sent two people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The wreck was reported about 6:15 p.m. not far from Idlewild Road Park and Mint Hill Middle School. That is between Margaret Wallace Road and N.C. 51.

According to several reports, the driver of an Audi apparently lost control of his car and struck several vehicles.

One person had to be flown to Carolinas Medical Center following the wreck.

Pictures from the scene from WSOC-TV showed a mangled red sedan on the side of the road. Nearby, another car was heavily damaged and lying on its roof.

Matthews Police are investigating, and haven’t said what caused the wreck.
