Union County authorities say the discovery of a jogger’s body behind a Lake Park church has been classified as a “death investigation.”
Deputies on Tuesday identified the body as that of James Martin “Mark” Hudspeth, 50. He lived near the jogging trail in the Union County town and had been reported missing by his family Monday after he failed to return from his morning run.
Deputies and other searchers scoured the area, and investigators said Sgt. Brian Griffin discovered Hudspeth’s body as he was looking behind Faith United Methodist Church. That is on Faith Church Road near Creft Circle.
Sheriff Eddie Cathey said Hudspeth’s body was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Charlotte to determine a cause of death.
The death heightened anxiety levels of some Lake Park residents, which Cathey acknowledged.
“An incident of this magnitude is obviously a serious matter of concern for the citizens of this community and for our agency,” Cathey said. “We will work diligently to bring closure to this family and to this community.”
