Gaffney woman dies from wreck injuries

GAFFNEY, S.C. A Gaffney woman has died of injuries suffered in a wreck last week, according to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.

Rachel Lail Smith, 73, died Tuesday evening at a hospital in Spartanburg, Coroner Dennis Fowler said.

Smith was injured last Thursday when her vehicle went off Sarratt School Road and struck an embankment. Fowler said it appears as if Smith was distracted by something shortly before the wreck.

Smith suffered a head injury and was taken to Novant Health-Gaffney Medical Center and then transferred to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
