Newton man convicted of hitting officer

NEWTON A Newton man has been sentenced to prison after being convicted this week of assaulting a police officer, prosecutors in Catawba County say.

Garison Sanders Jefferies, 25, was convicted of felony assault on a law enforcement officer and was sentenced to between seven and 18 months in prison.

Prosecutors allege Jefferies pushed a Hickory police officer into a door in October 2012 while the officer was on duty. A jury deliberated about 90 minutes before returning the verdict, prosecutors said.
