ROCK HILL A Rock Hill man is accused of stealing 20 grocery carts from a local store to sell for scrap metal.
Rickey Crawford, 52, is charged with grand larceny, according to a Rock Hill Police report.
A manager of Dollar General on Heckle Boulevard called police Friday afternoon to report a man in a green pickup was loading carts into the bed of his truck. She provided a license plate number and said the vehicle had heavy damage on the passenger side.
Police decided to visit scrap metal yards in search of the truck. While en route, an officer noticed a green truck parked in front of a liquor store. The tag matched the one provided by the Dollar General manager, except for one letter. The driver of the truck was identified as Crawford, and the Dollar General manager confirmed it was the same truck, the report states.
Another officer went to Carolina Salvage and discovered Crawford had made a transaction earlier that day.
Crawford later admitted to taking the carts to sell for cash. During a jail interview, he provided a written statement that he took 20 carts valued at $10,000 within the past two weeks, according to the report.
The Dollar General manager went back to Carolina Salvage to retrieve the stolen carts, but they had already been crushed.
