A Lincolnton family provided a place to stay for Clay Allen Rudisill when he was experiencing hard times.

Now Lincoln County authorities have charged Rudisill with sexually assaulting a child from that family.

Rudisill, 51, formerly of Cherryville, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree sexual offense of a victim under 13 years old. Deputies said the alleged victim was a 7-year-old girl.

Deputies were called about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to a residence on Springs East Road near Lincolnton, about a possible sexual assault. Residents at the house provided deputies with a description of the alleged suspect, and deputies spotted a man fitting the description walking along Springs Road East.

Rudisill was jailed under $75,000 bond, according to authorities.
