Knights fall in extra innings

BUFFALO, N.Y. Ryan Goins singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning for the Buffalo Bisons in 1-0 win over the Charlotte Knights on Friday in game two of a four-game series.

Reliever Donnie Veal (0-2, 9.00) allowed the game-winning hit to Goins in the 11th inning and earned his second extra-inning loss of the road trip.

The Bisons got back-to-back singles in the top of the 11th from Kevin Pillar and former Knights slugger Dan Johnson. Matt Tuiasosopo grounded into a forceout, which put runners on the corners with one out. Veal struck out pinch-hitter Brett Carroll and Goins ripped the third pitch he saw for the game-winning single, which scored Pillar. The Knights fell to 0-3 in extra-inning games this season.

RHP Erik Johnson made his 2014 Charlotte Knights debut allowed three hits over six shutout innings. He struck out six batters and has not allowed a run in two straight starts for the Knights (dating back to Aug. 29). He’s allowed eight hits while striking out 14 batters over his last 13 innings pitched with Charlotte.

Charlotte reliever Frank Francisco struck out four batters over two scoreless innings in his fourth appearance of the season.

Right fielder Denis Phipps had three of Charlotte’s six hits.

Friday’s loss was Charlotte’s fourth straight.

Charlotte and Buffalo continue their four-game series at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Eric Surkamp (1-2, 6.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Knights, while the Bisons will start Ricky Romero (0-0, 3.60).

Monday marks the start of a four-game home series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

SOUTH ATLANTIC

Hickory 7, Kannapolis 2: Designated hitter Evan Van Hoosier walked three times from the leadoff spot with a hit, and scored three times for the visiting Crawdads (13-13).

First baseman Ronald Guzman went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs and a double.

Starting pitcher Kelvin Vasquez went 6 innings in the win and held Kannapolis (14-14) to 3 hits and a walk.
