Jay Bilas addresses Queens graduates

One of the nation’s most recognizable faces and voices for sports fans was the guest speaker Saturday as Queens University of Charlotte held commencement exercises.

Nice weather allowed the ceremony to take place at its traditional site, on Burwell Lawn in front of the university on Selwyn Road in Myers Park.

The university’s guest speaker was Jay Bilas, basketball analyst for ESPN and ABC and a Duke University graduate. Bilas has worked in TV since 1995 and also is an accomplished writer.

An estimated 2,500 people attended the ceremony.

It was actually the third commencement exercise of the week for Queens. Judith Halstead, from the Indiana University School of Nursing, was guest speaker at Thursday night’s commencement for the Presbyterian School of Nursing.

And Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Heath Morrison spoke Friday at graduation for the Hayworth School of Graduate and Continuing Studies.
