Man, woman die in Kannapolis house fire

By Steve Lyttle

An elderly couple died early Monday in a fire at their home in Kannapolis, officials say.

The fire was reported shortly after 2:30 a.m. at a wood-frame house in the 1000 block of North Ridge Avenue, fire officials said. A neighbor called 911, and firefighters found flames coming from the residence when they arrived.

Maria Bostian, a Kannapolis fire spokeswoman, said crews found two people unconscious in a common area of the home. They were later identified as Paul McLendon, 82, and Lillie McLendon, 87, according to media reports.

Bostian said firefighters brought the victims outside and began resuscitating them. The man died, and the woman was taken to CMC-Northeast. She later died of her injuries. Steve Lyttle
