Durham Bulls get to Charlie Leesman to top Charlotte Knights 6-4

DURHAM Mikie Mahtook had two hits and three key RBIs and the Durham Bulls got to Charlie Leesman to beat the Charlotte Knights 6-4 in Class AAA International League baseball.

Leesman (1-3, 2.95 ERA) entered Wednesday’s game tied with John Salles for the lowest ERA in Knights franchise history at 2.83. He also entered the game with the fourth-lowest ERA in the league this season at 1.70. Leesman, however, gave up a season-high six runs on six hits over just 2 2/3 innings pitched.

Charlotte jumped to quick 2-0 lead in the first against Durham starter Merrill Kelly. Micah Johnson opened the game with his first Class AAA hit – a double. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Andy Wilkins’ two-run home run.

The Bulls trailed 3-1 before scoring five times during the third inning and knocking Leesman from the game. The International League Pitcher of the Week, he walked four batters, hit one and allowed three hits during the third.

Charlotte added a run in the fifth on a Gorkys Hernandez single, but the Durham bullpen held the Knights scoreless over the final 4 2/3 innings. Charlotte’s bullpen combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

The teams will continue their four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday when Chicago White Sox left-hander Chris Sale will make a rehab start for the Knights. The Bulls are to go with left-hander Enny Romero (2-4, 5.02).
