Charlotte-area events for Friday, May 16

Music

Jamey Johnson

11 p.m. Coyote Joe’s, 4621 Wilkinson Blvd. $25. www.coyote-joes.com.

While his Nashville cousins are headlining amphitheaters, the Alabama-bred troubadour keeps things low-key – as he did with 2013’s unlikely Top 5 hit album “Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran” – with an intimate club show.

Charity

Kids Rock! Fundraising Gala

6:30 p.m. Charlotte Country Club, 2465 Mecklenburg Ave. Tickets must be purchased in advanced; contact Kimberly Beal at kim@cam1newton.com or 919-270-9082.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and musical guest Aloe Blacc headline a dinner party benefiting local, deserving youth in the areas of education, physical fitness and health care. The Cam Newton Foundation and Carolinas HealthCare Foundation are hosting the event.

Poetry

SlamCharlotte Poetry Slam

8 p.m. Booth Playhouse, 130 N. Tryon St. $10. www.blumenthalarts.org.

Blumenthal Performing Arts’ monthly competition is hosted by SlamCharlotte, a two-time national spoken-word poetry championship team (2007 and 2008).
