A mysterious deepwater fish washed up along the North Carolina coast, and photos of it are going viral, WBTV reports from Nags Head.

Thought to be a lancetfish, the strange-looking creature washed ashore near Jennette's Pier, and biologists there say it was alive when it was found.

Leif Rasmussen of Manteo found the fish, photographed it then walked the fish back into the ocean and released it, according to WBTV.
