After nearly drowning, 4-year-old is in critical condition

By Ames Alexander

A 4-year-old Catawba County boy is in critical condition after spending about 10 minutes underwater at Lake Lookout on Saturday evening, authorities say.

First responders revived the boy, whose name has not been released. He was later airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he remained hospitalized Sunday.

“He was down there a good bit,” said Lt. William Boston of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, speaking of the amount of time the boy spent underwater. “ … It will be touch and go for that young man, for sure.”

The boy’s parents live near Newton, authorities said. Ames Alexander
