Plane crashes near Newton, killing pilot

By Ames Alexander
Staff Writer

A pilot died when his home-built biplane crashed near the Catawba County city of Newton on Sunday night.

One person was onboard the plane, known as a Stolp Starduster SA-300, when it crashed in a wooded area at about 8 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The county sheriff’s office has confirmed a death in the crash, but the victim’s name has not been released.

The FAA is investigating, and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the accident’s cause.
