The Matthews Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource Department is offering an ample variety of summer camps focusing on sports and fitness.The department has designed athletic-based camp programs to help campers develop athletic skills in a supportive, encouraging, and social environment.“We want to create programs that are inclusive and designed to be fun and encourage participation,” said Brian Dlugosz, athletic programmer for the department.The camps run consecutively, so it’s possible to try more than one this summer. The following camps will be at the Crews Recreation Center, 1201 Crews Road in Matthews:Jumpstart Sports CampsSkill-based programs geared for kids age 7-15, 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Cost is $85 for Matthews residents and $95 for nonresidents.• Flag Football: July 14-18. Work on offensive/defensive positions, throwing/catching techniques, and play calling.• Lacrosse: July 28-Aug. 1. Work on throwing, scooping, cradle, passing, shooting, catching and play calling.• Soccer: Aug. 4-8. Focusing on dribbling, passing trapping, shooting and positioning. There also will be drills and games.Camp JumpstartFor the first time, the Crews Recreation Center will offer a full-day sport and recreation-based camp for kids ages 7-13, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost is $170 for Matthews residents and $180 for nonresidents.• Recess Games: July 7-11. Will include whiffle ball, kickball and dodge ball. Teams will compete in drills, games and tournaments. Also included will be movies, game and team building functions. • Olympics: July 21-25. Will focus on track and field, long jump, basketball and handball. Olympic-centered crafts, movies and other activities will be included. • Back to School Games: Aug. 18-22. Campers will learn and play flag football, lacrosse, volleyball, soccer and basketball.Gymstars campsThese half-day camps for children 3 to 6 years old will focus on health and fitness through organized sports instruction, arts and crafts, music/movement and gym games. The cost is $85 for Matthews residents and $95 for nonresidents.
