Charlotte drop road opener to Columbus in 12 innings

COLUMBUS, Ohio Elliot Johnson’s walk-off single in t 12th inning gave Columbus a 4-3 win over Charlotte Monday in the opening game of their four-game series. The Clippers ripped back-to-back-to back singles off reliever Donnie Veal (1-3, 5.56 ERA) en route to the win.

Things were looking up for the Knights who carried a 3-2 lead to the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Saladino’s solo home run in the top of the seventh inning off Columbus reliever Austin Adams had Charlotte in line for a win. Things didn’t go as planned.

Reliever Maikel Cleto struggled to retire the Clippers. He walked two batters and then allowed Tyler Holt to double in the tying run.

Luke Carlin immediately ignited the Columbus offense in the 12th with a leadoff single. Jose Ramirez followed with a perfect bunt single, which put the winning run on second base for the Clippers with no outs. Johnson then followed with the game-winning single.

The loss spoiled a good offensive game from the Knights, who notched 11 hits.
