A man who was trying to help a woman get her truck started on the side of a highway was struck and killed by a vehicle late Wednesday in southeastern Burke County, authorities said Thursday.
The woman and the driver of the vehicle that hit the man also were injured, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
The incident was reported about 10:30 p.m. on two-lane N.C. 18 near Rhoney Road, about 10 miles south of Valdese.
According to troopers, a woman’s truck had broken down along the side of the road. A 49-year-old man who lived nearby came out and was trying to help her.
The man and the woman were struck by a passing SUV, and troopers said the SUV then careened off the road and overturned. The woman was taken to a Morganton hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries, according to the incident report.
The name of the victims have not been released.
No charges have been filed in the case, but the N.C. Highway Patrol said it is continuing to investigate.
