Fire damages Hickory restaurant building

By Steve Lyttle

Fire heavily damaged a restaurant building in Hickory on Friday morning, officials say, but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze shortly before 5 a.m. at a building in the 1000 block of Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard SE, just north of Interstate 40.

The first firefighters to arrive reported seeing flames coming from the roof of the building, and a second alarm sounded. Crews brought the fire under control about 5:45 a.m.

The building formerly housed a Chinese restaurant but was being renovated to become a Wesley’s Tavern, officials said.

Damage was classified as major by fire officials. The cause of the blaze is under investigation, fire officials said. Steve Lyttle
