TOLEDO, Ohio The Toledo Mud Hens scored four runs on 11 hits and held off a late Charlotte rally to beat the Knights 4-1 on Saturday in game two of the four-game series from Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio.
Charlotte brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but closer Kevin Whelan struck out Michael Johnson to end the game and give the Mud Hens their second win of the series.
Toledo starter Drew VerHagen (3-5, 3.77) allowed just one run on two hits over six innings en route to his third win of the season. VerHagen walked two and struck out five batters in front of a sellout crowd of 11,500 fans.
The Mud Hens jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Wade Gaynor. That started a string of three consecutive innings in which the Mud Hens would score against Charlotte starter Charlie Leesman (1-5, 3.60), who was saddled with his fifth loss of the season.
The Knights got their only run of the game courtesy of an RBI single by Andy Wilkins. Jordan Danks came around to score the 208th run of his Knights career.
Kannapolis 4, Hagerstown 3: Hunter Jones went 2-for-2 and scored twice as the Intimidators finished off a doubleheader sweep of the Suns by taking Game 2, 4-3 (F/7), on Saturday in front of 3,980 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in Kannapolis.
The Intimidators (24-29) trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the first before Hunter Jones drew a leadoff walk and Cleuluis Rondon was hit by a pitch. Three batters later, Trey Michalczewski connected on a two-out, two-run double to put the Intimidators ahead, 2-1.
