A Union County teen who was less than two weeks from graduation was killed Sunday night when her vehicle went off the road and crashed.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said Samantha Windham, 17, of Indian Trail, was driving a Jeep that hit a culvert and turned on its side. Windham, a senior at Porter Ridge High, died at the scene.
Friends said Windham, known as Sammi, was returning home after eating dinner with a friend at a Monroe restaurant.
About 9:30 p.m., she was in the 3000 block of Poplin Road, a few hundred yards north of Secrest Short Cut Road, when she failed to negotiate a curve in the road.
Troopers said Windham’s vehicle went off the right side of the road, hit a culvert and then flipped on its side. Windham was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
Union County Public Schools officials said extra grief counselors were at Porter Ridge on Monday. Students are in their final full week of classes, with graduation scheduled for June 12.
