Richmond teen drowns in Pee Dee River

ROCKINGHAM A Richmond County teen-ager drowned Saturday afternoon while swimming in the Pee Dee River, authorities say.

Jaquan Bailey, 17, apparently suffered leg cramps, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. The incident was reported late Saturday afternoon near Blewett Falls, along the Anson-Richmond county line northwest of Rockingham.

Authorities said Bailey and several friends had gone fishing at the river. Bailey decided to jump in for a swim but encountered problems in the water.

The victim was a student at Richmond Senior High School and played on the football team there.
