CMPD: Man kills himself during west Meck standoff

A police standoff Monday morning in western Mecklenburg County ended with a man shooting himself to death, authorities say.

Police said their officers did not fire any shots during the standoff, which lasted about two hours.

According to investigators, police were called about 8 a.m. to the 9900 block of Parkridge Drive, after a report that a man was suicidal. When officers arrived, they said, the man barricaded himself into the home and fired several shots at police.

Authorities said another man, a woman and a child were in the house when police arrived, but the three were able to leave safely after some shots had been fired.

Police sent in a SWAT team and negotiators, in an effort to convince the man to surrender. Meanwhile, police used an automated phone system to alert neighbors about the incident.

When police negotiators were unable to contact the man, they broke into the home. That’s when they found the man had shot himself. Police said they will not release the name of the man who died.
