Today’s traffic: Wreck clogs southbound I-77

Crews have cleared a wreck from southbound Interstate 77 in Charlotte, but traffic problems continue on that roadway.

The wreck was reported shortly after 8 a.m., just south of the LaSalle Street interchange. It blocked the middle two lanes, and at one point, traffic was snarled for about 4 miles.

All lanes were opened shortly after 8:30 a.m., but the problems remain. At 8:55 a.m., traffic was snarled back beyond I-85.

At last check, there also were collisions on the Billy Graham Parkway, Albemarle Road and Johnston Road.

Here is the 8:55 a.m. update:

Center City

Uptown street closures ... Motorists are reminded that South Tryon Street is closed between Trade Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard for the Taste of Charlotte event this weekend. Several cross streets also are closed at Tryon Street.

North

I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from Brawley School Road (Exit 35) down to Gilead Road (Exit 23).

I-77 southbound, Charlotte ... Earlier collision cleared near LaSalle Street, but delays remain. Traffic moving 5-15 mph from mile marker 15 down to the collision scene.

East

Albemarle Road inbound ... Congestion and a collision near Reddman Road; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Lawyers Road to Sharon Amity Road.

Southeast

I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Providence Road to I-77.

Independence Boulevard inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from Eastway Drive to uptown.

Johnston Road ... Congestion and a collision at John J. Delaney Drive; traffic moving 15-25 mph northbound from the state line to I-485.

Providence Road inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from the Arboretum area to Wendover Road.

South

I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion; traffic moving 25-35 mph from Carowinds Boulevard up to Clanton Road.

Park Road, just north of Woodlawn Road ... Collision; minor delays.

West

Billy Graham Parkway ... Congestion and collision at Josh Birmingham Parkway; traffic moving 20-25 mph between West Boulevard and I-85.

Ashley Road at Tuckaseegee Road ... Collision; minor delays.

U.S. 321, Gaston County ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph in each direction between I-85 and Dallas-Cherryville Highway.

Gaston County

East Hudson Boulevard at N.C. 274, Gastonia ... Earlier collision being cleared; minor delays.

Stanly County

N.C. 205, south of Oakboro ... Road closed near Buster Road due to overturned truck. Closure expected until at least 8 a.m. Detour route uses Old Sand Bar Road and N.C. 742.
