A Catawba County woman was sentenced to nearly six years in prison Thursday after being convicted in a drug trafficking case, prosecutors say.

Stephanie Teresa Carver, 43, of Newton, was convicted of trafficking in opiates by transportation. She was sentenced by Judge Eric Levinson to between 70 and 93 months in prison, according to prosecutors.

Carver was arrested last August while riding as a passenger on a motorcycle, authorities said.

The motorcycle had been stopped at a N.C. Highway Patrol license checkpoint, and troopers said they found that Carver had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. During the investigation, authorities reported discovering that Carver was carrying two bags of opiate-type drugs.

Carver also was ordered to pay a $50,000 fine, prosecutors said.
