Originally from England, Sarah Ryberg has lived in Charlotte for the last 12 years and is a graduate of UNC Charlotte. After two whirlwind weddings - one in Charlotte and another in her homeland - Sarah is settling into married life and learning what it takes to be a Mrs. You can reach Sarah at sarahmryberg@yahoo.com

One of the most exciting parts of newlywed life for me was making our house a home. When we became “The Rybergs,” I was eager to cherish what that meant. Whether it was memories of our travels together or bits and pieces from our childhoods, I was determined our home would be a reflection of who we are as a couple.

Hubby and I are both pretty geeky, so you’ll find lots of Disney novelties and retro game memorabilia around our home. In fact, when we have more space we plan on having a game room for him and a Disney themed office for me. But our home is more than just the place we share our interests, it’s where we build our life together. So alongside those nerdy accent pieces you’ll find the little details that make up our day-to-day journey.

We started our home with a few basic pieces to make it ours and I thought it would be fun to share some of my own newlywed must-haves. So if you’re looking for inspiration, here are a few pieces to get you started.

Travel Map

What better way to showcase your journey than with a world travel map? I particularly love this design from Push Pin Travel Maps. The maps come with three different colored pins, which enables you to pin your separate and joint travels or even your dream vacation spots and already visited locales. For an added wow, decorate around the map with pictures from your travels.

Photo Frames

Speaking of pictures, frames are a must-have for telling your story. The shadowbox frame pictured above is from Pier 1, and offers a simple, but lovely design sure to complement any room.

Family Sign

I love cherishing the day we became a family and a welcome plaque is a great way to do that. With our nationalities, I was instantly drawn to this Union Jack and Stars and Strips plaque from It’s A Sign and Designs. The store offers plenty of options though, with plaques perfect for a cabin in the mountain or your very own nest.

A Fun Set of Coffee Mugs

As I said, hubby and I are pretty geeky and our nerdiness appears in random places, like our coffee cups. I absolutely adore these Scrabble tile Mr. and Mrs. mugs from Steel Trap Designs. These cups are not only a reflection of our hobbies, but cozying up over a cup of coffee or tea offers the perfect opportunity to connect.

Is there anything you’d add to the newlywed must-haves list? What did you and your spouse start out with? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
