The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board approved the appointment Tuesday evening of three new high school principals, two of whom are moving to CMS from Cabarrus County.

During its meeting, the board approved hiring Lynn Rhymer at North Mecklenburg High, Kevin Garay at Mallard Creek High, and Terra Matthews Kennedy at Phillip O. Berry Academy.

Rhymer and Garay most recently were principals in Cabarrus County – Rhymer at Central Cabarrus High and Garay at A.L. Brown High in Kannapolis.

The new principals fill vacancies created earlier this month when CMS added several “learning communities,” or regional zones, and promoted several high school principals to area superintendent positions.

Rhymer replaces Matthew Hayes at North Mecklenburg, after Hayes was named North Learning Community superintendent. Before coming to Central Cabarrus, where she has been principal for three years, Rhymer was principal for four years at Northwest Cabarrus High. She was regional principal of the year in 2013.

Rhymer, who has a bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University and a master’s from Appalachian State, taught mathematics and was a basketball coach from 1990 to 2004 in Burke and Gaston counties.

Garay fills a vacancy created at Mallard Creek when Principal Nancy Brightwell was named area superintendent for the Northeast Learning Community’s Vance Zone. Garay has been principal for five years at A.L. Brown and was assistant principal at the school four years before that.

He earned bachelor’s degrees from Concord (W.Va.) University and a master’s from Gardner-Webb University. Garay taught from 2000 to 2005 in the Newton-Conover and Lincoln County schools.

Kennedy has been an assistant principal at Garinger High since 2012, but the majority of her experience is at the school where she will be principal, as she served as instructional coordinator at Berry Academy for 10 years prior to the Garinger position.

Kennedy earned a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University and a master’s from Gardner-Webb. At Berry Academy, she replaces Curtis Carroll, who has been named superintendent for the West Learning Community’s Harding-Berry Academy zone.
