Foxx, McHenry won’t seek House GOP posts

Two of North Carolina’s senior U.S. House Republicans won’t run for House majority leader or any of the leadership positions resulting from last week's defeat of U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia.

Cantor, the current majority leader and possible heir to the House speaker’s job, lost in a GOP primary.

Rep. Virginia Foxx of Banner Elk is a member of House leadership as conference secretary. But Foxx said she won’t run for majority leader or Republican whip, if the current whip, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, is elected majority leader.

Five-term U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry of Cherryville said he has no plans to run for any leadership position.

McCarthy is the front-runner for majority leader. A vote is expected later this week. Franco Ordoñez
