ALLENTOWN, Pa. It had been 12 days since Eric Surkamp took the hill for the Charlotte Knights. On Monday, the left-hander looked as smooth as ever.
Surkamp went seven shutout innings, Josh Phegley, Matt Davidson and Andy Wilkins hit solo home runs during the fourth inning, and the Knights beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5-1 in the opener of their four-game series.
“It was a good feeling to be back out there,” said Surkamp. “I felt fresh and everything felt good.”
Making his 10th start of the season, Surkamp (3-4, 4.88 ERA) pitched a season-high seven innings. He gave up just three hits and struck out eight. His 77 strikeouts on the season are tops in the Class AAA International League.
The teams will continue their series at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. Right-hand3er Erik Johnson (1-4, 6.70) will start for the Knights agtainst right-hander Sean O’Sullivan (3-6, 4.09 ERA).
