Workers begin to dig pavement forcing drivers to detour as three of four lanes on Beatties Ford Road have been closed Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2014, for sewer line construction. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department said the inbound lanes of Beatties Ford Road will be closed between Cemetery and French streets. That is between the Johnson C. Smith University campus and the Brookshire Freeway. Inbound traffic will be detoured onto Cemetery Street and then on French Street, back to Beatties Ford Road. Outbound traffic will be funneled into one lane.

Two of Charlotte’s heavily traveled thoroughfares will be closed for construction this weekend, but motorists in Cornelius will get a one-week reprieve from a similar fate.

Charlotte transportation officials plan to close all lanes of Providence Road near McAlpine Creek around 9:30 a.m. Friday. The closure is expected to continue through the weekend, forcing motorists to use detours around the site.

And around 9 a.m. Friday, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close Beatties Ford Road for installation of a new bridge over McIntyre Creek. The road will be closed for about three months, officials say.

Meanwhile, the planned closure of the Catawba Avenue bridge over Interstate 77, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed a week.

The Providence Road closure will affect the most motorists – about 35,000 a day, according to the most recent N.C. DOT survey. The closure, required so crews can install a new sewer pipe and repave the road, is expected to last until Monday morning.

It will interrupt through traffic on Providence Road between the intersection of Rea and Alexander roads and Old Providence Road. Motorists can use Old Providence Road or Sardis Road as alternates.

The Beatties Ford Road closure will affect about 20,000 motorists each day, according to the DOT. Crews will be replacing a 40-year-old bridge that is functionally obsolete, officials say.

The new bridge is expected to be open by Sept. 17. Vehicles will be detoured around the project site by using Sunset, Reames and Lakeview roads.

Meanwhile, crews have delayed the closing of the Catawba Avenue bridge over Interstate 77 until midnight June 27. The bridge will be closed until 8 a.m. June 29.

The closure is part of the diverging diamond interchange project. That interchange is scheduled for completion by Nov. 1.
