IronPigs rally past Knights

ALLENTOWN, Pa. Maikel Franco singled home Rusty Ryal in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs walked off with a 4-3 win Thursday in the finale of their four-game series against Charlotte. Lehigh Valley won three of four games.

Matt Davidson’s RBI double in the top of the eighth gave the Knights a 3-2 lead, but the IronPigs scored two in the ninth off Charlotte reliever Donnie Veal (1-4). He allowed the tying run on an RBI single to Ryal. Three batters later, Franco got the winning hit.

The Knights finished with eight hits, including another home run to add to their league-leading total of 81. Carlos Sanchez hit his fifth homer of the season in the fifth off Lehigh Valley starter Chris Bootcheck.

South Atlantic

Charleston 10, Kannapolis 7: Michael O’Neill hit two homers for the host RiverDogs, including the go-ahead shot in the eighth.

Former N.C. State catcher Bret Austin, making his pro debut, had a two-run double in the fifth to give the Intimidators a 5-1 lead.

Kannapolis starter Tyler Barnette, who played for Hickory High and the Charlotte 49ers, pitched five innings and allowed three runs on six hits, with one strikeout.
