Charlotte-based lawyer John Fennebresque was elected chairman of the UNC Board of Governors on Friday.

Fennebresque – a vice chair at the international law firm of McGuireWoods – is a UNC alumnus and has been a member of the university system’s board since 2011. The Board of Governors is the policy-making board for the 17-campus statewide system.

Hugh McColl, former chairman and CEO of Bank of America, called Fennebresque’s election “the best news to come out of Raleigh in several years. John is smart, capable, tireless, tenacious and – most important – a champion of higher education.” Hilary Trenda
