Jonathan Shaver of Clover, S.C., was charged with involuntary manslaughter, felony hit and run, and driving while impaired after a bicyclist was struck and killed late Sunday on South Tryon Street.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police charged a South Carolina driver with involuntary manslaughter, felony hit and run, and driving while impaired after a bicyclist was struck and killed late Sunday on South Tryon Street.

Vung Vu, 46, was riding a bicycle south on South Tryon in the Steele Creek area when he was struck by a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Jonathan Henry Shaver, 39, of Clover, police said. Shaver also was traveling south.

Vu struck the windshield of the Jeep before being thrown to the ground, police said. Medic pronounced him dead at the scene shortly before midnight. Shaver was uninjured.

Police said Shaver didn’t stop at the crash scene but instead went home before calling 911 to report his involvement in the crash. Shaver voluntarily returned to the scene with Clover police.

Police said that speed doesn’t appear to be a factor in the crash and that they suspect Vu also had consumed alcohol.

Any witnesses are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704-336-8862.
