Police: One injured when shots fired at Sweet 16 party in Fort Mill

FORT MILL Police are investigating a shooting outside a Carowinds Boulevard motel late Friday night where a person was hit during a melee in the parking lot after a Sweet 16 birthday party, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.

In the incident outside the Comfort Inn, the mother of the birthday girl stated that the party “got out of hand” after someone sent out a social media message on Instagram about the party location and how long it would last, the report states.

Marquis Winston, 17, of Charlotte, was shot in the left shoulder by an unknown suspect, according to the report. Winston told police as he was leaving the party and running he heard shots fired and was hit. He was taken to a Charlotte hospital.

Another person who was working security told police he heard the shots fired and said a bullet passed through his pants leg. Another man told police his vehicle was hit with a stray bullet.

Still another man, Xavier Steele, 19, of Charlotte, told police he took a shotgun from his vehicle and fired it into the air to “scare off the other shooters.”

Police took guns into evidence but no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
