Funeral Monday for Newton school counselor Maggie Daniels

Funeral services for Discovery High School counselor Maggie Daniels will be Monday morning in Cleveland.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday morning in Cleveland for Maggie Daniels, the 31-year-old Catawba County school counselor and basketball coach who police say was killed more than a week ago.

Daniels worked at Discovery High School in Newton. Her body was discovered by a friend on the morning of June 28 inside her apartment. Newton police ruled the case a homicide after an autopsy was completed.

Newton police Maj. Tim Hayes said detectives worked the case on Independence Day and throughout the weekend. Investigators checked several areas near the Windsor Apartments, where Daniels lived, including a nearby jogging trail.

According to several broadcast reports, detectives are looking at surveillance video from a used car lot near the apartment complex.

There were no new developments announced in the case Sunday.

Daniels grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame College in suburban South Euclid, Ohio. She moved to North Carolina about eight years ago and taught at Newton-Conover High before becoming a counselor at Discovery High, an academic magnet school.

A funeral Mass for Daniels is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Cleveland. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Daniels’ name to Discovery High School, 605 North Ashe Ave., Newton, NC 28658.
