Shelby and Cleveland County fire officials are investigating what caused a fire that destroyed a popular restaurant late Tuesday in downtown Shelby.
The fire was reported about 11:45 p.m. at the Taste-T Drive-In, in the 300 block of East Marion Street. Firefighters found the building engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Crews were able to put out the fire in less than 30 minutes and prevent it from spreading to other buildings in the downtown area. No injuries were reported.
No employees were in the building at the time, as the restaurant closed at 8 p.m. Taste-T Drive-In was within a short walking distance of the Cleveland County Courthouse and several other county government buildings.
The restaurant offered take-out service and did not have a dining area. It was popular with people who work in Shelby’s central business district and with county employees.
