CMPD said alcohol was a factor in fatal scooter wreck

The driver from a University City area scooter crash that happened in late June died Friday evening, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Christopher Raymond, 38, was thrown from a Piaggio scooter around 5: 30 a.m. on June 24 while driving on Old Concord Road into the University City area, detectives with CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit said.

Raymond was wearing a helmet when he ran off the right side of the road and crashed, police said. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries and charged with DWI at the hospital.

Though speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, Raymond died from injuries from the wreck, officials said.

Anyone with information about Raymond’s activities on June 23 before the crash occurred, or who saw the vehicle traveling on Old Concord Road, should call CMPD Detective Kevin Allred: 704-432-2169.
