26-year-old reservist dies during fitness test

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. Officials at Joint Base Charleston say a 26-year-old reservist has died during a fitness test.

Authorities said Staff Sgt. Richard Spofford collapsed Saturday afternoon during his Air Force Physical Fitness test and died a short time later at the hospital.

Officials say Spofford had been a member of the 315th Maintenance Group since January 2013 and lived in North Charleston.

His commander, Col. Scott Sauter, says the unit is going through a difficult time and their prayers are with Spofford and his family.

A cause of death has not been released.
