SC woman lunges at police, is fatally shot

A 37-year-old woman was fatally shot by a Georgetown County sheriff’s deputy Saturday night after deputies were at her home to check her well-being.

The woman’s family called police to check on her at about 6:30 p.m. at her residence on Ashcraft Circle in the Litchfield Beach Community of Georgetown County. Her name was not immediately released Saturday.

Police were told that the woman was in a bathroom with a knife threatening to harm herself, according to a press release. Deputies were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence and located the property manager who unlocked the door, the release states.

When sheriff’s deputies were clearing the residence, the female reportedly charged the deputies with a knife, according to the release. Police said a sheriff’s deputy at that moment shot the woman.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division was called to investigate the shooting and the crime scene. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
