The Brantley Road bridge over Lake Fisher in Kannapolis was closed Monday after a routine inspection found significant decay on one of the bridges timber piles.
The N.C. Department of Transportation said the problems must be repaired immediately, so the road was closed. The DOT said repairs are expected to start Wednesday, with a floating barge being used as the work platform. Repairs are expected to be completed by Aug. 8.
In the meantime, the detour rouote uses China Grove Road, Lane Street and Old Salisbury-Concord Road.
Otherwise, the big problems for motorists at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday are in north Mecklenburg.
Southbound I-77, already slowed by heavy traffic, has come to a near-crawl after a collision at Exit 25 (Sam Furr Road). There also is another wreck in Huntersville, at Old Statesville and Alexanderana roads.

Windsor Street, Monroe ... Windsor Street is closed, between Hayne and Beasley streets, for irrigation and utilities work. This is part of the streetscape project along Hayne and Windsor streets in Monroes downtown area. the road will be closed until Friday, officials said.
Heavy convention traffic ... Motorists can expect extra foot and vehicle traffic in Charlottes uptown for the rest of the week, transportation officials say. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Convention is bringing about 11,500 people to the Charlotte Convention Center. Many convention-goers will be arriving at the convention center around 8:30 and 9 a.m. each day, then leaving around 5 p.m.
I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion and a wreck near Sam Furr Road (Exit 25); traffic moving 15-25 mph from Brawley School Road (Exit 35) down to Gilead Road (Exit 23). Heaviest (and slowest) traffic is between mile markers 28 and 23.
Old Statesville Road at Alexanderana Road, Huntersville ... Collision with injuries; moderate delays.
I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-30 mph from Providence Road to I-77.
Johnston Road ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph northbound from the state line to I-485.
Providence Road inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from the Arboretum area to Wendover Road.
