A disabled truck caused major slowdowns for traffic Monday morning on southbound Interstate 77. The truck broke down near the LaSalle Street interchange about 8 a.m., slowing traffic for several miles. Congestion remained a problem after the truck was cleared. A number of wrecks are being reported early Monday afternoon across the Charlotte area, perhaps caused in part by heavy rain.

Charlotte firefighters were called about 12:30 p.m. to free a trapped motorist in a collision at Randolph and Wendover roads in southeast Charlotte. Injuries were reported in that collision, and traffic is heavily congested in the area.

A spokesman for the Charlotte Fire Department said a crew of 12 firefighters was able to free the motorist in a little more than 15 minutes. Medic said it took two patients with potentially life-threatening injuries to Carolinas Medical Center.

Another problem is at a familiar location for wrecks – the ramp from southbound I-85 to southbound I-77. A tractor-trailer jackknifed earlier Monday afternoon, and traffic is heavily congested in the area.

Motorists are reminded to use caution Monday afternoon because streets are wet and ponding has been reported on several roads due to the heavy rain.

Here is the 1:25 p.m. traffic update:
