INDIANAPOLIS With three Indianapolis natives and another Indiana-born player, it was a homecoming of sorts for a number of Charlotte Knights on Monday as the team played in Indianapolis for the first time this season. For one Charlotte veteran, however, Monday’s game served as another milestone in what has been a stellar career.
Backed by a Jordan Danks home run – the 50th of his Knights career – and 18 hits, Bobby Doran threw six solid innings as the Charlotte Knights beat the Indianapolis Indians 8-3 in the opening game of their four-game series. The win was Charlotte’s sixth over its past seven games.
Danks, who is in his fifth season with Charlotte, continued to move up the ranks in Charlotte Knights franchise history. He homered in the first inning to score the 238th run in his Knights career, which passed Joe Borchard for first all-time in franchise history. He is also the Knights’ all-time leader in triples and walks, and 10 hits from tying Borchard for first in hits.
• Charlotte slugger Andy Wilkins was named International League Batter of the Week after he hit .647 during the All-Star Game-shortened week and led the league with 11 hits, five home runs, six extra-base hits, and a 1.588 slugging percentage in four games.
• Left-handed pitcher Jarrett Casey, who posted a 1-0 record with one save and a 1.98 ERA in 20 games for the Birmingham Barons this season, was promoted to the Charlotte Knights. Casey, 26, takes the roster spot of RHP Daniel McCutchen (DL).
Infielder Justin Jirschele was assigned to Winston-Salem (Class A+) to make room for infielder Carlos Sanchez on Charlotte’s roster.
Hickory 10, Greensboro 4: The visiting Crawdads stormed back from a 3-0 deficit in a seven-run sixth with five singles and a four-run triple by Joe Jackson – Shoeless Joe’s great-great-great nephew scored after an error.
• Monday’s game between the host Kannapolis Intimidators and Lakewood BlueClaws was postponed because of rain. The teams will make up the game as part of a doubleheader when Kannapolis visits Lakewood July 26-29.
