A north Charlotte fire went to a third alarm Wednesday night when a firefighter went missing in the heavy smoke.

The fire started around 9 p.m. at an auto repair shop on Atando Avenue near North Tryon Street.

Firefighters were on the scene in about three minutes and began fighting the fire. One firefighter lost contact with the others. Commanders sent out a mayday call, indicating a firefighter was unaccounted for. All the firefighters left the building and the missing firefighter was located.

No one was injured in the fire, which was extinguished in about 40 minutes. The cause is under investigation.
