Friday Traffic: I-85 lanes reopen in Gastonia

Traffic on Interstate 77 southbound in Mooresville was at a standstill for several miles on Friday afternoon after a wreck just south of Williamson Road Exit 33.

The wreck happened at about 3:30 p.m. A car with its front smashed in could be seen in the left lane, along with numerous emergency vehicles with their lights flashing.

At 4 p.m., traffic remained backed up north to at least N.C. 150 Exit 36. Sirens continued to sound on the interstate.

Motorists should use U.S. 21 and N.C. 115 as alternates, although those two-lane routes typically become clogged when a wreck happens on the interstate.

Earlier Friday, southbound lanes of Interstate 85 were closed after a truck jackknifed , Gastonia police and fire officials said.

Traffic remained backed up for several miles even after the interstate was reopened, and firefighters said U.S. 74 westbound was the best alternate route for the morning commute.

The truck jackknifed near the New Hope Road exit.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, meanwhile, investigated an overnight wreck with injuries in the 3700 block of Beatties Ford Road.

The wreck happened shortly before 3 a.m., about the same time of another wreck at Johnston Road and Providence Road West. No injuries were reported in that wreck.

The Charlotte Department of Transportation, meanwhile, announced that Ridge Road between Prosperity Ridge Road and the western loop of Waverly Lynn Lane will close at 9 a.m. Aug. 4 and reopen by 9 a.m. Aug. 18.

The closing is for construction of a storm drain for the Prosperity Ridge Road Connection Project.

The project is a city component of the overall I-485/Prosperity Village split diamond interchange being constructed by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

A detour using Prosperity Church Road, Johnston-Oehler Road, Mallard Creek Road and Amanda Ellen Road will be posted.

Variable message boards will be placed in advance of the closure advising motorists of the closure dates.

Local access will be maintained, and CATS service will be unaffected.
